Our History

INTERBOLSA is the leading entity in Portugal in post-trade services and offers integrated and flexible solutions at European level as the Custody and Settlement Central Securities Depository belonging to the EURONEXT Group.

INTERBOLSA – Sociedade Gestora de Sistemas de Liquidação e de Sistemas Centralizados de Valores Mobiliários, S.A. (INTERBOLSA) is a limited liability company, entirely held by Euronext Lisbon – Sociedade Gestora de Mercados Regulamentados, S.A.. Thus, INTERBOLSA is part of a larger group of companies (the EURONEXT Group) which includes, in addition to Euronext Lisbon, Euronext Amsterdam, Euronext Brussels, Euronext Dublin, Euronext London, Euronext Olso and Euronext Paris, as well as other subsidiaries of the Group.

INTERBOLSA’s project began in February, 1989, under the leadership of an Installation Committee and the company started its activity in September 1991 with the registration of the first three securities issues in the Central Securities Depository, in the Clearing and Settlement System and in the Continuous Trading System.

On 2nd of April 1993, INTERBOLSA – Associação para a Prestação de Serviços às Bolsas de Valores, was officially created under the dispositions in the Código do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (Securities Market Code) that came into force to regulate the Portuguese securities market in 1991. At that time INTERBOLSA was formally set up as a non-profit civil association having as mandatory associates the Associação da Bolsa de Valores de Lisboa (Lisbon Stock Exchange Association) and the Associação da Bolsa de Valores do Porto (Oporto Stock Exchange Association, later renamed Bolsa de Derivados do Porto – Oporto Derivatives Exchange), with an equal participation of 50% each.

In the meantime, in order to meet the changes taking place in the European financial markets, as well as worldwide, the Portuguese capital market was subject to a process of changes that had the impact, among others, of changing the legal nature of INTERBOLSA.

Thus, on 10th of February 2000, through the change of the legal nature of INTERBOLSA (from a non-profit civil association into a commercial corporation), INTERBOLSA – Sociedade Gestora de Sistemas de Liquidação e de Sistemas Centralizados de Valores Mobiliários, S.A. was officially created as a public limited company.

In July 2018, INTERBOLSA was granted authorization to operate as a CSD under Regulation (EU) No. 909/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 (CSDR).
